Using WindowsXP-Pro, Media Center Version. Sorry, everybody, I know this
problem does not belong to this group but I cannot find anywhere else to
turn. I went to a birthday party yesterday, took photos and wanted to set
up a small website to share the photos. I had heard about Picasa so I
thought I would try it. I did not realize it was going to download EVERY
..JPEG on my computer to the Picasa program; which includes knitting
instructions, tax forms, medicine orders, etc., alot more stuff than just
photos. I thought I could just delete a particular file from Picasa and it
would still be in the original folder in my Documents but not so. The
folder was moved to the trash and I had to retrieve it. My questions: can
I uninstall the Picasa program from the Add/Remove and not lose all my
photos? Does anyone have a better program to suggest, a program that does
not just take over the computer?

I hope this helps, I had the same thing happen to me. You can configure
Picasa to only searh the folders you want it to. You have to go to the
"tools" and then to the folder manager.

FWIW...when first opening Picasa you
can select: Scan Only:
My Pictures / My Documents / Desktop.

To remove a folder from Picasa but not
from your hard drive...Right click the
folder and choose: Remove From Picasa /
Tick...Remove From Picasa / OK.
You can remove the "Watched" folders
the same way.

Picasa should uninstall successfully.
The images are not actually *in* Picasa...
it only links to the files in their original
location on your hard drive.

Maybe FastStone Image Viewer
would be worth a look.

If you wish to upload and share your images
there are many sites that offer free space.
Personally, I've been happy with Club Photo
and Flickr...here's a link that describes many

I tested Picasa last year and found that I couldn't delete photos from the
server. Before uninstalling the program, I copied all photos from Picasa to
another folder on my hard drive. I would suggest you back up anything you
don't want to lose before you uninstall.

I currently use Photobucket.com to host my images. The free account allows
you 1 GB of storage space and 10 GB of monthly bandwidth. I'm extremely
happy with the service. If you want an additional free program to edit your
images before posting on the web, Irfanview comes highly recommended.
