What is the ultimate goal?
Here is one way:
Clean Installation
Disconnect all peripherals (camera, printer, scanner, etc)
Disconnect any ZIP drive
Disconnect network/modem cable.
Go to BIOS and set CDROM as boot device before hard drive.
Insert Windows XP CD and reboot.
At "Press any key to boot to CDROM" quickly press a key and follow the
prompts for a Clean installation:

If you are installing using Windows XP Upgrade, insert qualifying
media in Step 4b.
Delete all partitions in step 5 if you desire to erase all data on the
hard drive.
Partitioning and formatting will be done automatically.
All data will be destroyed, back-up important data first.

Enable or install firewall BEFORE connecting network cable.

Install ALL Critical Windows Updates:
Start/All Programs/Windows Update

After you are finished, you will need to load the appropriate drivers.

If your computer was shipped with Windows XP, these procedures may or
may not apply.
Check your manual or contact the computer manufacturer for more
details.

Well the problem is i cant even get xp to start i even tried it through bios and then booting it up and nothing pops up it tries to load xp but always stops at the blue micrsoft xp screen right before i get to the log on screen...ive tried everything i called my stupid computer manf. they were no help and ive been looking on the net and no one has answers so i might as well just erase the whole thing u know what i mean...and also will bios still be there if i erase a hd...like my friend was saying just take a magnet to..lol

BIOS is a component of the motherboard and is not affected by a reload
as described in my last post.

Hi, K.

Sounds like you AND your friend are pretty confused. :>(

Yes, you may be able to "physically" erase your HD with a magnet. We used
to erase floppy diskettes that way about 25 years ago. But I think it would
take a pretty powerful magnet to get through the protection on a quality
hard disk these days. And, yes, your BIOS would still be there unless you
are REALLY careless and clumsy, because the BIOS is not on the hard drive at
all. The BIOS is inside a computer chip plugged into the motherboard. The
BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) tells the computer how to start up,
including how to find the hard drive and read it to find out what to do
next.

But, that's not what you really want to do anyhow, is it? You just want to
reformat your drive and reinstall WinXP from scratch, right? Then it's easy
to do and all the instructions come with the WinXP CD-ROM.

Set your computer to boot from the CD drive. How to do this varies with the
make and model of computer, but your computer manual - NOT the Windows
manual - should tell you how to do this. If you tell us the make and model,
somebody here probably will recognize it and tell you how to do it on that
machine.

Then insert your WinXP CD-ROM into the drive and boot the computer. One of
the first questions is whether you want to repartition and/or reformat your
hard drive. If you give it the go-ahead at this point, it doesn't care what
was on the drive before; it will just bulldoze it all and start fresh. Tell
it Yes, and to use NTFS (if it gives a choice between FAT32 and NTFS). When
it finishes reformatting (might take a long time if it's a big drive!), it
will proceed to install WinXP. No magnet required, and your BIOS will be
untouched. ;<)
