Having very little space, it would be great if I could
find a printer that would fit on a small shelf in a space
no more than 6 or 8 inches high where I could add paper
and retrieve my printouts from the front (without having
to take the printer off the shelf :-).

Anyone ever noticed anything that might meet these
requirements? (It doesn't seem to be the sort of thing
I can contrive a google search for :-).

HP make several entry level printers that may fit the bill, some of these have
bottom loading front exit paper paths. Have a look at their website.

The Canon iP4200 that I bought (I swore I'd never buy Canon again, but it
was the only make that had the configuration I wanted) has a front-loading
paper cassette, in addition to a standard flip-up tray on top. It also does
duplex printing.

With the top tray flipped down, the printer is less than 7" high.

Pretty much any of the HP DeskJet's will meet your requirements. Al
thee printers on this page
http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/s...ow=1&a1=Function&v1=Print&catLevel=2#bcAnchor
would meet your requirement with the possible exception of the DeskJet
460c which has paper feed from the back/top. For general printing I
would recommend the DeskJet 6540 or 6940, see

Yep, they look pretty good. I also found the Brother HL-2040,
but it costs more than the cheaper deskjets (I have no need
for high volume printing - or color either, but if color wants
in, it can come :-).

Thanks for the pointers.

You do not mention which technology of printer you are seeking. Laser
(monochrome) or inkjet (monochrome or color). Many of the HP's inkjet
printers still offer both front paper loading and front printed image
presentation. Canon has some very small "portable" printers recommended
for laptop use.
