When I look at XP System Information Total Physical Memory it shows 512 MB.
When I look at the Toshiba Notebook Maximizer display it shows Total
Physical Memory as 479 MB.

Why? Is part of the memory used as video memory? Where can I look to account
for the missing bytes?

Does your notebook have a separate video card? If no, then you have a
portion of your physical memory dedicated to your integrated graphics. This
is most likely the case.

What it is is that you have a 32MB Integrated Video Card. The video card
part is taking 32MB of you phycial memory and using that for video.
