Photosmart S20 no go in XP

My HP Photosmart S-20 scanner won't work in XP. As soon as I start the
scanning software I get big help screen with a message saying "Lost
communication with scanner".

This is a dual boot PC which also has Windows 98 on it and the scanner
works fine in Windows 98.

I have the latest driver CD from HP and the scanner is listed in
Device Manager as working.

I finally got it to work! What I did was

-Uninstall the software and device from Device Manager
-Delete all registry keys that contained the words "C5101A" and
"Photosmart"
-Run the USB update for XP and the scanner from the web site, with the
scanner connected
-Disconect the scanner and run the software install from the web site,
and reconnect the scanner when the installer prompted to.
