Photosmart 7700 POS

We bought a HP Photosmart 7700 awhile back from Costco, and were in the
process of moving, so we didn't take it out of the box for a little over
year to set it up.

Then it printed a few things nicely and failed, saying that one or more
cartridges were bad, but they were BRAND new cartridges!

HP balked some, saying the warranty was up, then they sent me new
cartridges for it, but that didn't work, then a new power pack and that
didn't work.

As it was, I could turn the power off, then back on, and get it to
print. But now it won't even do that.

I'm disgusted. HP had a good reputation with us. We have a Laserjet 4P
that's been working for me since 1989! No cleaning or anything, just
change the cartridges when they use up. Amazing!

But this experience has really turned me off to their products now. I
paid over $150 for a printer that printed about 5 photos and that was
it!

I later heard that they were making cheap crap printers like this now.

So what can I get for printing color glossy photos that won't be a lemon
like this one has?

When it comes to computers and peripherals, it appears that Costco is a
division of Hewlett-Packard.

But one advantage of buying junky stuff from Costco within their own
satisfaction guarantee period is that they'll give you a refund --
better protection than any goddamn crap 90-day "warantee" from any
manufacturer. I believe that their current policy is 1/2 year on
computers and 1 year on peripherals. They came through for me when
eMachines refused to honor their warantee.

You can get your files to the same Costco, where the current price for 4
x 6 snapshots is seventeen cents. I believe that the process uses
standard photo dyes. You can email them the files, crop them on line,
and go pick up your prints. Why mess with super-costly printer ink and
the hassles in the face of this? Granted, that some folks want to do
their own art photography and fine image control (like in the darkrooms
of yore), and I've gotta respect this. But for the way that I print,
plain paper is fine and a "close enough" color match is fine, too.

I support generic and relabeled ink.
It's good enough for printing, and it's good enough for spinach!
