Photoshop problems under XP

I am trying to run Photoshop 4 under XP. The installation
appeared normal and so do vanilla operations on a single
picture. However, after loading several modestly sized
jpeg pics (< 10) via explorer, I get the following error
message in a dialog box with a Photoshop identifying
tab: "Disk Error-36 while reading or writing virtual
memory file. Sorry but this error is fatal". In some
cases I can successfully close Photoshop. But sometimes
the system freezes and I have to pull the plug
(figuratively speaking). Is this a Photoshop 4/XP
compatability problem, an XP configuration problem or
what? Would very much appreciate any words of wisdom.

Additional info: When Photoshop 4 is first launched,
everything appears normal. When I try to open a pic - say
from the samples folder, I get a strange message from
Microsoft Outlook: "Either there is no default mail
client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the
messaging request. Please run Microsoft Outlook and set
it as the default mail client". What messaging request???
I only get this message after attempting to open a pic on
the first Photoshop 4 launch after starting the computer.
Subsequent launches and opens don't seem to trigger it.
What does Outlook have to do with Photoshop?

The behavior noted in my first post happens after getting
the Outlook message.
