On launching photoshop I get the following message,
"You currently have photoshop's primary scratch and
windows primary paging file on the same volume, which can
result in reduced performance. It is recommended that you
set Adobe Photoshop's primary scratch volume to be on a
different volume, or preferably on a different drive"
Cann anyone translate what this means and offer a
solution in laymans terms please

Photoshop creates a file when you are working on a image. These images sometimes can be very complex and instead of storing everything RAM, it stores some on the hard drive. The area where it stores the data is called the Scratch Disk. The message is telling you that to avoid future potential problems, select a place where it can store its working temporary files. If you can, it is best not to use the same drive/partition as the one that has the main program installed on. If you have Photoshop installed on C:, you will have fewer problems in the future if you choose drive D: or any other hard drive/partition other than C:. You can choose this in the preferences. This does not mean it won't work if you select the same drive as the main program, it just helps your program to run smoother if you seperate them.

You must have just installed Photoshop -- either new or as an upgrade. Any
settings that you may have had for Photoshop are wiped out and you have to
redo them. Photoshop can take a lot of room to process images -- it does its
own paging, so allows you to put its work area on another physical drive for
better performance. The message simply tells you that if you dont do this,
it will be slower than it could be. Creating a second partition on the same
hard disk will not help -- you want to have separate read/write heads.
Remember, it is just a warning.
