Is Photoshop 3 for Win compatible with WIN XP? Will I
have problems running it?
You got my curiosity up, so I dug out the PS 3 CD and installed it. It went
without a hitch, and runs fine. The version I have is 3.05, which has some
bug fixes from the 3.0 version (for Win95 compatibility). If you have a
version older than that, I'd download the 3.05 update from Adobe support
downloads and install it right away after you install PS. They may have
some other additions you can use, like the MMX-enabling patch.
Note: you have to have at least 16 MB of RAM. 8^) And 20 MB of hard drive
space...I have photos that take more than that now.
I don't know how much you gain by doing this, it's still a pretty powerful
program (if you have the tutorial book that came with it, it's an excellent
learning tool), but PS Elements will give you more features. Much harder on
resources though, if you have 128 or 256 MB of memory, PS3 should be
noticeably faster than elements. One annoyance I remember to watch for is
that it saves files with capital extension letters, bad deal for web use
(JPG, TIFF), so you might try to remember to rename them with small letters.
