Photos Unviewable

I recently purchased an HP Photosmart digital camera and am having a problem
viewing the photos I take on my computer. The photos appear as smears of
colour both when using HP software and XP photo software....please help

How do you transfer the photos to the PC?
Have you magnified the pictures and viewed them on the cameras builtin
display?
Do the photos seem normal on the camera display?
Can you download and display the photos on another PC as a check?
The smearing may be due to attempted display of a "raw" camera format,
instead of a Jpeg, Tiff, or Gif format.
Finally, how do you connect the camera (or the camera memory card) to the
PC?
