I would very much like to keep selected photos of family and friends on map
icons thus identifying the event file by a single picture, but these photos
changes on me. Windows apparently selects photos randomly out of my control.
Music albums have been added to the computer with artist picture, but this
also changes randomly.

Right click on the folder name and then on Properties.
Click on the Customize tab in the opening window and now you can select a
picture you want from the folder and this will then stay until you decide to
change it again.

Hi Yves
Thanks for your suggestion - the problem though is, that we have been doing
just as you suggest for the past year or so with success. Unfortunately this
no longer works wholely. At first we add the photo and change file type which
works - but next time we access the picture files or music albums the picture
may have changed and even file type may have changed too from picture to
music or whatever. It does'nt seem to be a virus and we are using Norton
against this threat.

Do you have both music and photo files in the same folder? If so, XP relies
on the first file listed in the folder to recognize it as a photo or music
file.

I'm using XP's standard file setup. music contains folders with music and
either attached cd-covers with pictures or selected pictures of artists. The
music folder contains a lot of music. Separate from this is the photo folder
with a lot of sub folders and about 15 GB of photos.
