If you are finding that when you insert them into PowerPoint, they are
larger than you want them in the slide and you have to resize them in
PowerPoint, estimate the size reductions so you wont have to resize as much
in PowerPoint. For example, if you want a half-slide picture in PowerPoint
and when you insert it, it is a little larger than the slide, estimate a
resize of 50%.

Open the picture in some program like IrfanView. Resize it by the amount
you estimated - 50% in my example. Then, save it to a new file name as a
JPEG with a quality setting of about 70%. I've found that at 70%, if I
don't do any other processing on the pictuyre, it is acceptable.
Experiment. If you can further reduce the quality setting, it will be
smaller still.

The result should be a PowerPoint file much smaller than if you insert all
pictures in uncompressed format at sizes larger than they need to be. This
works for me, but if others disagree, please comment.
