Photos can not be found on SD card

I have this brand new Acer Laptop, which has a 5-in-1 card reader.
I also have a SD card which I only use for my digital camera.
So, I try to import my photos by inserting the SD card into the card reader,
the Autoplay pops up and I click on 'import pictures' and then it says that
there was an error because 'The Directory Name is Invalid'. So then, I take
out the SD card, put it back into my camera and then try to import my photos
using the USB cable.
However, this time it says that no pictures or videos can be found.
Not only this, when I open the SD card on Windows Explorer, it says the
folder is empty. But, if I connected the camera to the PC (which is XP), the
photos are in that folder.

I don't know what to do, I tried to update my drivers, but Windows said they
were all up-to-date. And even though, for now I could always import my photos
on the PC then transfer them on to my laptop, but I won't have the PC for
much longer.

Sorry for long post. I wanted to explain the situation fully

which Acer laptop?
what size SD card
what camera?
and to be clear, you have another PC running XP where everything
works?

does http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936825 help?

Sorry.
It's a Acer Aspire 5051AWXMi
512MB SD Card
Vivitar Vivicam 5188
And yes, I have another PC running XP and everything works there.

And I tried to install the update at the link you provided, but a dialogue
box appeared telling me that it 'did not apply to my system'

Thanks for the help

I installed it, restarted my laptop, but I'm still having the same problem.
Thanks for the help.

Jade,

Perhaps you have a USB device driver recognition issue that can be resolved
by deleting the INFCACHE.1 file. It can get corrupted with bad data and
cause issues like you MAY have. The file is located at: C:\Windows\inf.
There, scroll down to the INFCACHE.1 file and right click it and select
delete. To do this, you will likely have to give yourself permission to
delete it, because of Windows built-in security. Just right click the file,
select Properties and then click on the security tab. Let us know whether
this procedure does anything. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. It
does no harm to delete that file, even when it has nothing to do with the
problem.

Jade,

I did a google search and found this posted by someone with a similar
problem as yours:

"I've been experiencing the same problem with usb storage devices for the
last few weeks and have visited numerous forums discussing it. After having
no joy I decided to take a look around my system folders and have now got
these devices working again. While looking around I discovered 2 points of
interest:

In C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository I had two folders named
"usbstor.inf" but each one had a different set of numbers attached to the end
of the folder name. - could this be where part of the problem lies?

When i looked in my C:\Windows\inf folder i discovered the usbstor.inf and
usb stor.pnf files were missing - this definitely had to be an issue.

Once I discovered these anomalies, I proceeded to copy the pnf and inf files
from the most recently updated usbstor.inf folder to C:\Windows\inf. I then
went back to the update driver wizard, pointed to the inf folder and what do
you know but they all started working again."

Determine whether that information does anything.

did you format this card in the camera or in the Acer? does it make
a difference if you format it in the Acer and then take pictures and
then try to retrieve them?
