Hello,

I just tried the PhotoPlus program. I edited a photograph and saved
it. The program saves it's images in the .spp file format. That file
is not recognized by windows programs or Ifranview. Would anyone know
how to change this .spp file into a jpeg or bitmap file? Any help
would be appreciated.

Thank you!

Reopen the file in PhotoPlus and do a "save as" after telling it to
convert the file to a .jpg or .bmp.

That format is either a:

Sprint Printer File

or a:

Serif PhotoPlus Native Format File

Proprietary formats suck. There is already such a huge plethora of
image file formats, that I personally refuse to use anything that only
opens in the program in which it is created.

You can't use SaveAs in PhotoPlus to change to a different file format.
You must use the Export command. The reason it wants to save as an *.spp
file is that is the only format that can save uncompressed layers. Because
jpg and the other "Universal" file formats don't support layers (when you
convert to them, they compress the layers into a single layer and when you
re-open the file it will still be a single layer.) This is common in
programs that support layers.

So in PhotoPlus, Photoshop, PSP, PhotoPaint, all the programs that support
layers, you need to continue to to save in the proprietary native format
until you are certain you are done editing it, only then export to a common
file format. many people create 2 copies, one for distribution, and one for
editing.

Thank you!

Hello,

I am hoping someone can answer one last question about this program. I
thought this was freeware? It keeps asking me for a serial number and
to aquire it by calling the developer of the software program. Is
anyone else getting this message?

Thank you!

This is common with free Serif software, if you call them and register the
software (for free) they will give you the serial number. The software is
really quite good but they WILL send you offers to upgrade (At very
attractive prices) I upgraded to V7 for $10 - the current version is now V9
and includes color management.

Some find this objectionable, I don't - and I've never had any problem with
excessive spamming from Serif. I guess each has their own level of
tolerance.

EGAD!!! Whatever you do, DON'T phone them!!! Also, give them a
temporary email address if you need to get the code. Give them no
information or they will spam and phone you to death.

Frankly, you should look for another program IMO. I had PhotoPlus
(either 5 or 6, I forget) installed on my system, but they spammed me
so badly after I foolishly gave them my real email address (live and
learn) that I got pissed off and removed the software. It provided no
additional functionality over anything else I was using anyway. If you
want a really good photo editing program, try Photofiltre (if you're
not already, that is):

There is a download link to the English version of this program here:

I register with serif quite often, everytime I redo my HD and to try new
software I sometimes remove other programs that cause s errors
elsewhere, therefore I have to reinstall other programs and yes
PhotoPlus was one of them once.

In 3 years with registering with serif I have only had an occaisional
email from them for offers about at most 1 every 6 weeks to 1 every 3
months.

I was using v5 then moved to v6 now I own v7 and v8.

So if one every 6 weeks to 1 every 3 months is tons and tons of spam
then do not register and find another program to use, as their's is good
to better then most.

Also you can unsubscribe after registering, in any email they send you,
is a link.

As I've mentioned many times, multiple requests on my part for Seriff
to stop spamming me (using that link and via direct emailing) had
absolutely no effect. They continued to spam me. Besides, why bother
with Photoplus when PhotoFiltre is here now:

Leagues ahead of PhotoPlus.

Frankly, **** SERIF and the horse they road in on.

Hehehehe! Tell us how you really feel John! :)

All seriousness aside, I don't like Registerware myself. If they're not
going to use your address, then WHY DO THEY WANT IT?

*Ahem* Had just gotten back from walking downtown and having a few
beers. Kinda had my safeguards disabled. Sorry. However, I really do
think that PhotoFiltre is the best freeware image editing program yet.
Just wish it had a help file, although I personally don't need one to
use it.

I agree. It's the find of the year so far, and I recently replaced PhotpPlus
with it on my site. I'm using is as a "1 File Wonder", and so far, I haven't
found it wanting for any plugins. Think about that. A single 2.2mb
executable that has 80% of PhotoShop's functionality!

Kinda says something about bloat alright. You can tell that the person
who wrote it is a real expert at image editing. Really went to great
lengths to set up the UI in a logical fashion for speed and easy
access. For instance, I really like the way the Preferences window is
set up. My prediction is that in the future, other programs will be
imitating the way this program is set up.
