I have been trying PhotoFiltre 5.4 but cannot find settings for altering
'resolution' or 'DPI, can this be done within this program?

At the moment any files loaded into the program from my digital camera
are at 72dpi and I would like to change these files to 10"x8" at 200dpi
but cannot find the settings which will allow me to do this.

I can alter the files in IrfanView and then call-up PhotoFiltre but
would much prefer to alter image size and resolution in PhotoFiltre.

On the menu:

Print menu?

There is some control in the print menu which allows a certain
adjustment of resolution.

Unfortunately I do not at this moment in time wish to print the images
out but rather 'burn' them to CD.

I can alter the resolution in other imaging programs but would much
prefer to do this in PhotoFiltre.

I did have a good look at Image size but there is no setting in there
for altering resolution.

With Photoshop if you select Image size you have an option of also
setting the resolution.

My intention was to alter the resolution and then 'burn' the images to
CD.

I still find PhotoFiltre to be an excellent imaging program and despite
having some costly imaging programs on my system I like working in
PhotoFiltre.

Acckkkk! What was I thinking! You were talking about pixels per unit
of measurement and I was talking about resampling! Sorry. Looks like
you're right... the program doesn't have that capability. Guess you
would have to do it in Irfanview or XnView (both of which have
suspiciously similar ways of doing it) or one of your commercial programs.

Unless you are printing then DPI isn't relevant. If you want to alter
pixel dimensions then John C has the answer.
See argument http://www.scantips.com/no72dpi.html

That is an excellent link that you posted. I purchased the Scantips
book many years ago.

If you need to supply image files on CD and have been requested to
supply at 200 or 300dpi which is not unusual then being able to alter
resolution is important.

Using IrfanView and selecting Image Properties I can key in the required
resolution and it will then show what the image size will be at that
resolution.

IrfanView and PhotoFiltre work well together being able to alter
resolution in PhotoFiltre would just be the icing on the cake!

One of Irfanview's most powerful features is its batch mode (File,
Batch Conversion). Using this you can point it to a bunch of files
and have it perform the same operation on each one.

To change the dpi, you need to use the advanced options, and enter
the dpi you want in the "Set DPI" box.

You can thus change all your images in one quick operation.

So you have been told the required print size then. I tried setting DPI
in Irfanview and then opening the saved print in a variety of
applications. Only some of then seemed to take notice, the rest needed
the resolution set again at print time.

Have you looked at the batch function in PhotoFiltre yet? I wonder how it
compares to Irfanview?

The batch function is quite powerful..but seems a fair bit slower
than irfanview. It loads each image into the viewing area, which
means you can see what is going on, but it is bound to slow it down.

Also, from what I can see there is no way to set the DPI as part of a
batch operation. Image size can be controlled, as can a number of
brightness / contrast / filter / rotate type functions.

It's good, but I'll be sticking with IrfanView when I need to do a
bunch of stuff quickly to a group of images.

Once I have set the DPI within IrfanView at 200dpi (200pixels/inch) and
saved the file as a Tif it will open in any of my imaging programs and
the file will still be at 200dpi.

I've tried this in over ten imaging programs (I only use a few of these,
my favourites on a regular basis) and there is no problem with the file
saved within IrfanView.

I must admit that I am quite impressed with the features of IrfanView.

I will have to try the batch mode feature that you mention as it would
be very handy being able to alter DPI etc for a number of images at the
same time.

Try the 5.5 beta :-)

Thanks for posting the link, when I tried it I was getting an error
message and could not get to the pf55beta.zip file only a Tiscali
welcome page in French would show.

On visiting "http://www.photofiltre.com/" I noticed that version 5.5 is
no longer beta but the latest official release and have downloaded and
installed the 5.5 version on my system.

I visited the site using "AltaVista" which makes it easier to negotiate
the site, also took the opportunity to download all the plug-ins.

Cheers - Harry

Phoenix,
Most people don't like to download a file without reading something
about it first, so a better link is this one:

http://www.photofiltre.com/

Since the website is in French, the best way to view it in English is
to use Alta Vista's online translation service, "Babel Fish" which is
here:

http://world.altavista.com/

You can drag the resulting page's upper frame until it disappears.

Downloads for ver. 5.5 can be accessed by clicking on "Remote
loadings" on the translated page.
