Photo Story 3 - a question re profiles

I have put together a 17 minute project of digital photos I took
with my HP camera (more to come!) and a few stills from the
movie I made, and have a question about the profile to save it in so that I
can bring it up in MM2 and save as a DVD-AVI for burning to CD's
and DVD's to be played back on a DVD player.

Have just done a small test where I saved it as both:

"Save your story for playback on your computer -
Profile for computers (640 x 480)"
and
"Profile for creating DVD's - Pal
Profile (768x576)"

and noticed that the DVD's Pal profile results in a much softer image,
not clear and sharp in other words, when they are both saved as
DVD-AVI in MM2.

I will probably go with the "Save your story for playback on your
computer (640x480) unless someone can give me an idea on the
best profile to go with.

Trying to get my head around this profile thing!

I agree with your observations. Profiles for computer produce much sharper
and clear results. In my experience these also produced better results when
converted to and played on DVD. I too cannot understand why having a blurred
looking image on a PC would look any better on a DVD player... So I guess I
am with you in this confusion as to why the profiles for DVD etc produce
soft results.

Can any body from Photostory 3 team clarify it please?

One big difference between the computer profiles and the PAL/NTSC profles is
that the computer profiles use square pixels so they can be played back on
the computer display without being resized which is especially important on
digital displays like LCD flat panels. The NTSC and PAL profiles use
non-square pixels so they will be resized for playback on computer displays.

Dean, your information is correct and that was also my initial thinking too,
however the profiles in questions (DVD profiles for PS3) use square pixels
and the output size is the same as for the corresponding computer profiles
(640x480 for NTSC and 768x576 for PAL). These are inspectable in Windows
Media profile Editor.

C:\Program Files\Photo Story 3 for Windows\Profiles\1033\

{913A60D4-75A2-44EB-B559-990C2C23470B}.prx

These two differ from the similar profiles for Movie maker which are always
the width of 720 and use non-square pixel encoding.

That is interesting. I'll contact some of my friends in the PhotoStory team
and see what I can find out.

I just wanted to confirm the following. You're creating the WMV files from
PhotoStory, importing them into MovieMaker, dragging them down to the
timeline and publishing them out as a PAL DV-AVI file?
Thanks
