How do I create small photos? I have found that a 800x600 pixel JPEG, at 72 dpi, compressed at 9 out of 12, is a good quality slide to show on 1024x768 laptops, but that is still around 140 Kb.

That size/specs sound very good to me - if you are using the image at that
size. If you insert and find you are reducing the size of the image to fit
the slide, then reduce the size in an image editing program. I generally
compress .jpg's to "7" or "8". The only other thing to check would be that
the image is RGB (vs. CMYK).
