I would like to have a choice about using PPW or not. Sometimes I want to
print a picture in a different size than is offered by PPW. I have a friend
who also uses XP Pro and PPW doesn't automatically load when he wants to
print from a file in Explorer. Is there a way to disable PPW.?

Ask your friend how they changed the default action.

Yes you can disable it. But why do this?
If you want to print a different size you need software to do this. Do you
have the software to do this?
If so, right click on the picture and click on Open with on the opening menu
and then select the software listed there that you want to use. The photo
will open in it and then just print what you want.

I want to disable it because it will not print things the size that I've
scanned. I scanned a document that was 6" wide and 2.75" high (deposit slip).
The demensions are accurate on the description of the file in "my pictures".
However PPW's minimum print size is 5x7. My friend never did have PPW
automatically load and therefore does not know how to change it. I cannot
find any options, preferences, properties, etc. in the program. I would just
like to know how to access it and disable it. Thank you.

If you run the command to disable PPW, you will also disable other XP
functions associated with image files, so I don't think you want to do this.
You can do several things.
1. Use Open with as I recommended before
2. Change the association for editing from PPW to the software you want.
John Inzer will give you the instructions on how to do this.
3. Open the software you want to print with and then open the file you want
to print.

You do not tell us the software that your friend is using for printing, so
we don't quite know how to respond. Do you have the same software? With some
photo editing software, you can, during installation, specify this software
to be your image viewer and editor instead of PPW without disabling the PPW
capability if you ever want it.

If you do not have software to edit and print, you can download and install
the free software from here:
www.faststone.org
Then open Faststone and open your image in it and print any size you want.

Finally, there is another possibility depending on the scanner you have.
Instead of saving the file you can direct the output of your scanner to your
printer.
