Can someone recommend a photo printer between $50 & $300 and is there such a
thing as being Kodak compatible? If so is it important.

I love my Canon i950 (now superceded by the i960)... but my advice is to go
to your local PC store and look at all the photo printers and compare the
sample photos. Get the salesfolks to demonstrate the photo printing
capability of them... so you can see speed and quality.

Try to get one that has separate ink tanks for each color... that way you
can replace a single color when it runs out rather than have to purchase a
tricolor cartridge which may have some of the other ink colors left. In my
case Magenta runs out quickest (probably because Magenta is used to make
black ink appear blacker).

But only your eyes can make the final choice.

Ensure it's USB... if possible, USB2.0 if you have USB2.0 ports on your PC.
