I am attempting to build my website. When I go to adjust the photo page
properties, it goes all the way to the progress window and fills the bar in
said window, but no further. What is the problem and how can I correct it?

Not sure what you mean by "photo page properties"

I am refering to the photo gallery properties. I was able to get it to except
the photogallery in the horizontal mode, but when I try to convert that to a
slide show/preview layout, it stalls after filling the generating thumbnails
bar.

Rather than trying to "convert it," I would recommend creating a new one in the style you
want.

Can that be done when your not working on a page in your web site? Then added
to a page you create?

no.

you have to create the photogallery on a page that is in your web.
and you can't rename the folders that fp creates for the photogallery.

Well, I tried it and it didn't work. It is only allowing me to create and
view horizontal thumbnail galleries. It still stalls in the progress dialog
box after it fills the progress bar in that same box.

Pre-size and optimize your images before you Import them into FP, usually I
size them to 550px wide or so.

Then Import them into FP, usually I build a new sub-folder under the
existing Images folder. Once you've imported them, when you create the album
you will use them from the folder inside of FP.

Your images may be too big (file size wise) if you didn't optimze
them...that may be your problem.

A nifty, and free, tool to optimize, resize, rename, batch tool is
http://www.irfanview.com

Nope, that didn't do it either. It is still only allowing my pics to show in
the horizontal mode and only if I leave all other settings default. If I even
change the font on the captions, or the number of pics to use in a row, it
still stalls after filling the progress bar for generating thumbnails. If
this is such a pain, how much worse is it to just create an area where you
need to have a username and password to access the pages, and to only be able
to view them? Lord oh Lord what have I gotten myself into here?!?! LOL!!

The FP galleries have limitations, some are known, some seem to be
mysteries. When you hit an unknown wall...switch to something else...like
JAlbum. It's free, customizable, and easily incorporated into an FP web (
http://www.jalbum.com ). Thats for slide show type galleries.

If you want a montage kinda display you can just create your own by putting
your thumbnails into a table with or without visible borders and linking to
bigger images on their own page...or use Spawn for popups - another great
freebie program from http://www.jimcoaddins.com

You can create batch thumbnails with another free program called Irfanview
( http://www.irfanview.com ) - this is an incredible image manipulation
program that you should have in your toolbag anyway.

hth..
