photo noise reduction

NoiseWare Community Edition is a high-performance noise suppression software
designed to decrease or eliminate noise from digital photo or scanned
images. Unlike most image processing software tools, that utilize simple
methods (such as median filters) to treat digital noise in images, NoiseWare
features a sophisticated yet fast noise filtering algorithm. Using adaptive
noise profile capability and sharpening function, NoiseWare greatly reduces
the visible noise while keeping the details in the images.

Up to 3X faster than available commercial tools, NoiseWare diligently
removes:

* high/low ISO noise in photographs
* grains in scanned images
* JPEG compression artifacts
* Moire pattern effect

the sample images look fairly impressive - anyone tried it for themselves
yet?

Default setting totally smeared grass and leaves.

Perhaps this filter is better for large flat areas such as close ups of
faces etc.

There is no Edit/Undo (or CTRL+Z)

There is no File/Close. You can't close a file without closing the program
or replacing the file with a new one.

There is no real-time preview. (I prefer full screen, real time preview, but
will settle for less.)

It is a 1 File Wonder, and has a small EXE size of 500KB, so a fix here and
there could make it useful.

There are several profiles, along with manual sliding of the tool bars
to achieve the effect exactly as you want it.

It works well on all sorts of pictures / images, and is particular
effective if you scan pictures.

I agree there is a need for this feature.

Even when you process an image, until you save it you can continue to
process it until you get exactly what you want to see. However, the
process that you applied cannot be reversed, and the only solution is
to reload the original.
There is no File/Close. You can't close a file without closing the program

I agree on this one, that would be a nice feature, though I am not
editing Extremely large images, so I can live without it.

Actually, there is a real time preview - the image will show a quick
rendering of how the output will look before you process - however,
this is not near as noticeable as when you actually process the image.
After selecting your settings, click the GO button - and the process
is applied. Now, if you click and hold the left mouse button on the
image itself, it shows the original, whereas releasing the button
shows the processed image - and again, this is not permanent, until
you save the image.

I was taking all of your comments in stride, as I love to get scanned
images (names scanned cover art, etc) and so I started playing around
with the program. At first, all you said seemed to be correct,
however, I kept playing and accidentally discovered a few features.

One of the best features about it though is that fact that it allows
you to automatically append to the end of the name of the file you are
editing (default = _filtered) so you can then open another image
viewer and actually view the differences, without actually modifying
the original.

These two are good, perhaps they're better alternatives:

Polaroid Dust & Scratch Removal Utility:

http://www.polaroid.com/service/software/poladsr/poladsr.html

Helicon Noise Filter:

http://helicon.com.ua/noisefilter/

I use them both to good effect. Both can, for some reason, turn a 2.5
mb .jpg into a 600 kb file for some reason. And the resulting images
look far better than the originals.

I forget who pointed out the second one to me, but I'm very thankful.
It's a nice program to have in my imaging software collection.

But John, I bet you have already rummaged through the Mediachance site.

Bob,
You're right... and in fact, I've looked at both. However unlike
the two I mentioned, neither do anything that my commercial programs
can't. They would probably work fine for somebody who doesn't have the
commercial programs that I have.

another program worth looking at is Neat Image http://www.neatimage.com

Thanks Andy. I've downloaded it and will check it out. The example
look promising. Also, that's about the fastest server I've ever run
into or I got lucky. The download time appeared to be instantaneous
for the 1.3 mb file.

Andy,
It's nagware. Every time you start the program, a screen opens
that tells you that you're using the "free Demo editin of Neat Image"
and has a link in bright blue to "Purchase Neat Image". That's not
freeware in my book. In fact, the folks at Nonags agree with me and
their whole site is set up on the premise that Nagware isn't freeware.

Besides that, it doesn't as good a job as either of the two I mentioned.

Sorry, but off my system it comes.

Well, they're fun to collect, but I find myself gravitating to Photofiltre
for removing dust, scratches, and other editing effects.

Really! Even though I like that program a lot, I have so many
commercial ones that I've kind of let it sit on the back burner. I
presume you're refering to the Noise/Dust reduction filter? Just tried
it and you're right, it does work very well.

I really like Photofiltre, but each time Antonio updates it, it takes
a lot of work to reinstall along with all the updated plugins and the
like. It's worth the effort, but I can be kind of lazy sometimes.

Heh... just noticed that he came out with a new version the day before
yesterday (6.0.1). Guess I'll post a notice. Also, now's as good a
time as any to upgrade my copy.

Back around 1997 or so I found a beta ver of Eye Fidelity Tools. I
used/use Photoshop and it was the best artifact, moire cleanup plug-in
I have used.Great for doing a clean up and then bring back details
with photoshop's history brush...or using it on another layer, etc.
I just googled to see if it still existed and found this link
http://www.freephotoshop.com/html/dvp_technologies.html
It appears to be cripple ware demo now, but if an old copy is still
somewhere to be found I would highly recommend it.
The free tools at Mediachance is a good link, Bob. Been usin their
stuff for years. :)
