I recently swapped to Windows Xp and after the change for
Windows Me to Xp I now have a number of hundreds of
photographs that I had loaded to CD's that I am no longer
able to access. Is it possible to convert these CD's to a
format that I can again write to and access?
Thank you.

If you used a application such as Direct CD to copy the files to the CDs,
then the problem is that your Windows XP computer does not have the needed
application to read the CDs. If you still have access to your old computer
{or any computer with the application, such as Direct CD, that you used to
create the CDs}, open the CDs and then close choosing the option close so
that the CD can be read on any computer.

I have seen mention that Roxio has free software that you can add to Windows
XP to read these CDs, but I have not experience to verify.

This has nothing to do with the change to XP. These files were
written in a particular graphics format by a program you used to
have when you were running Me. Either you no longer have that
program installed and have no other program that recognizes this
format, or else you are trying to open the files by
double-clicking on them, and don't have an association between
the extension and the appropriate program.

How are you trying to access the files? By double-clicking on
them or by starting some graphics program and trying to open them
from there? If you tried by double-clicking, try starting the
graphics program first. If you can open it from there, post back
here for more information on how to make double-clicking work.

For more information, tell us what the extension of the files is
(the three characters after the dot at the end of their names).
That will provide information on what programs can open the
files. Also if you know what program wrote the files, let us know
that too.

Depends on the software you used, but probably either Direct CD or InCD.
If you wish to write in that 'packet mode' in XP you will need a XP
Compatible version of the program; if all you want is to read the disks
then either UDFReader from www.roxio.com or EasyWrite Reader from
www.nero,com respectively are the tools (free) that you need
