Hi,

I use XP for a several months. It works fine except the imported
photo's. When I use my scanner or digital camera and import the photo's
via the scanner wizard or twain-software, the photo's always displayed
darker then the original. On windows 98 are the colors exactly as the
original. Is this a configuration problem or has Microsoft built it in?

It's hard to say. A way to find out is to import a reference picture, adjust
the display controls and video driver to show the reference file image as
you would expect it to look. Then compare it to a scanned picture. I suspec
that the scanner software has some settings that might improve things for
you.

Anyway, on http://www.inkjetart.com/custom/ Are a couple of such reference
pictures.
The same pictures work well for adjusting printer color compensation.

The basic idea is to get the display to show a reasonable reference picture
in terms of color, intensity, etc. with little compression of colors at
either the very light or very dark colors. Then, a printer may also be
adjusted, based on a printed copy of the reference file. A scanner might be
adjused with this, if the printer can produce good quality picture printing.
The best method is to obtain a preprinted reference, Kodak's Q-60 target for
example.
This can be scanned in and the scanner softwaer adjusted to optimize the
scan results.
