If you are using a fax program - you could disable the program when you
want to use the phone or adjust its settings for how many rings the fax
software should allow before connecting to the phone line. Details should be

If you have distinctive ring to signal an incoming fax vs an incoming call,
check that your modem and fax software support these things. Details

something in the modem's manual as well.
