Control Panel | Automatic Updates
uncheck the "Keep my computer up to date..."

Microsoft does not collect info from your pc or your
personal habits, keeping you pc upto date is a wise thing
do not disable that feature, I would however strongly urge
you to make backups and often, make a master backup and
save it offsite, then make periodical backups.

There are other spyware companies that do collect data
if you go on the internet, they install cookies.
just get and use often adaware and spybot along with
spyware buster.

If your computer is used in a business and as such is important you may
not want to have the automatic updates enabled as some updates may
actually make your computer crash. This is well known, and larger
companies typically test new patches before they are distributed to the
workstations. Since I was stupid enough _not_ to do a drive-backup of my
computer before installing a patch I had to reinstall, my own fault of
course, so always do a _drive_-backup before installing any patches.

Another thing that you should be aware of is the agreement you enter
into with microsoft when you use the automatic update service. It is in
place to give Microsoft the right to install patches on your computer
when you connect to the internet. I would strongly advice anyone that is
using this service to actually READ the legal agreement before using the
service. Especially if it is a business computer.

I'm not a lawyer, but this seems like good advice whenever you enter into
ANY legal agreement. :-)

Yeah, and especially when you authorize a third party to install and
uninstall software on your computers...
