Philosophy of .NET - use of .NET on a non-Windows platform

While reading Troelsen's "Pro C# 2005 and .NET 2.0", I came across the
assertion that ".NET is not confined to the Windows operating system".

Does anyone reading this forum use .NET on a non-Windows platform? I had
assumed that this is just like saying that java runs on mainframe, i.e.
technically possible but no-one actually uses it to run their business on -
it is more of a marketing exercise.

I have a collegue here in Nashville that exclusively programs for Mono (.NET
on Linux/UNIX).

Thanks for the info about Mono, Patrice also mentions Mono and gives their
web site, which refers to projects that are using Mono which I will follow up.

However, have you heard about Portable.NET which according to the book I am
reading at the moment. Portable.NET "is another open source distribution of
the CLI that runs on numerous operating systems. Portable.NET aims to target
as many operating systems as possible (Win32, AIX, BeOS, Mac OS X, Solaris,
all major Linux distributions)".

I would be interested to hear what you, your friend who works with Mono,
Patrice or anyone else who reads this posting thinks about the relative
merits of Mono versus Portable.NET.
