My DVD drive , a Philips DVD8801 suddenly stopped working last night. I had
just installed Vista and later Office2007. All was well then I accepted some
updates from Microsoft, two failed, out of 8, but thereafter my DVD does not
show and attempts to load or update the driver get an error39 code.

Also my USB 2.0 is now USB 1.0. All items plugged in have the message "this
device would rune beter if a USB 2.0 drive was used". When I check further I
am advised to load USB 2.0 drivers.? WHY when I had usb 2.0 when Irunning the
same computer under XP.? ( I have listed this problem seperately)

Anyone help.

Thanks for the advice.

I will try out the fix for the DVD when I get home, I am at work just now.

The USB devices I am trying are USB2.0 devices but it has been suggested
that I may have to download Vista drivers manually for each device to ensure
Vista can see them as USB2.0 devices and not default to USB1.0.

Again thanks for the advice. I will confirm the fix so others reading this
will know if it works.

Best Wishes

For DVD/CD drive not showing in Vista it is a reg edit issue. However to
date microsoft have not released instruction on this. I contact my vendor and
they were able to talk me through the process, it is complicated by the fact
Microsoft will not answer questions on OEM copies of Vista and that each
manufacturer can and does modify their own OEM software.

I would advise
1. Contact your vendor if your Vista serial number has OEM in it
or
2. Contact Microsoft phone service if you are within your 90 day free
helpline use.
or
3. Wait until someone more competent than me posts the regedit to delete the
upper and lower values for the drive affected.

re USB2.0 I am told this is a software issue and I have to pay £1.50 an
minute ($3.00 a minute) to resolve it. I will wait for a free fix to
appear.!!!

I was having problems with USB 2.0 , sound card reloading drivers etc.
Problems all resolved with updating bios to VISTA version. DO NOT USE XP
UPDATE IT MAY BE FAULTY.
HOWEVER
Once Bios was updated I was prompted to re-vaildate my copy of VISTA. This
odes not happen automatically. I had 45 minutes onto Support from Microsoft.
I am UK was passed to validation in USA passed to Support in USA, passed back
to UK and had UK support finally validate me by them phoning telephone
validation service!!! THANK GOODNESS FOR TOLL FREE SUPPORT.

UPDATE YOUR BIOS BUT YOU WILL PROBALLY HAVE TO VALIDATE VIA SUPPORT> GOOD
LUCK
