Hi,

My 5-year old Philips 151AX has stopped being readable--how to explain
this?--until Windows has booted up and put it into 1024x768, its native
mode. That is, when you first turn on the monitor, no input, all you see is
large bands of white and black flickering. And that's all you can see until
Windows is fully booted and a VGA card has taken over. So you can't see
anything under DOS, any booting process or anything. It acts the same no
matter what computer it's connected to, so I know it's the monitor itself.

I've tried cleaning the plugin, rattling it around, etc. to no avail. There
were odd moments when it acted normally, but they're very rare now.

I wonder if there's anything I can do other than send it off to Philips for
repair? Tnx.

The monitor has circuitry to do mode translation when the lower
resolution modes are requested. The native mode being 1024 X 768 means
that there has to be translation taking place when lower resolutions are
requested. There is no scanning used in LCD monitors, as like in a CRT
monitor. They work by using matrix addressing via a controlled matrix
translation operation, to the proper pixel locations on the screen.

There are some complex circuits, and firmware involved for the
resolution translation and pixel addressing. Most likely there is a
failure in that area.

You should have got a cheaper monitor, like mine, which is
fine (touch wood) after 6 years!!

You could try another PC. It is not impossible that this behavour
is caused by your video card.

That's probably not a smart move. Given the age of the monitor,
the tube's lifespan *) and the price of a repair, it's probably
smarter to buy a new monitor. And enjoy 3 more years of warranty.

*) no, not the picture tube, I know. But there's one or 2 light
bulbs inside that do not last eternal :-)
