From my research, the Xerox Phaser 740 is a color laser printer. When
you speak of text, do you mean black printing, or is text ghosting in
any color?
If only one color is being affected, then something besides what I am
assuming below is likely taking place. If it is happening with all
colors, the explanation below may be the cause.
If I understand this printer correctly, there are four toner cartridges,
but they do not have integrated drums for each as some color printers
do. Instead this unit has a image belt which has the toner from each
color distributed to it and then it is transfered to the paper and fused.
As the image belt ages it can become less sensitive to light and charges
and may not release the excess toner left after transfer properly, and
that can causes ghosting. Ghosting can be due to either mechanical
problem (a wiper blade may have worn or dried out or otherwise not make
proper contact) or the image drum/belt material may have become
physically worn or scratched, or may have lost some of its sensitivity
to charges required to hold and release toner.
Although this is a guess, your image belt unit may require replacement.
It is is "90%" used up that is an estimate and depending on how much
coverage the image have, whether OEM toner was used or 3rd party, and
other considerations, the image belt may have reach the end of its life.
Since these are quite costly, you should check with a professional
before making such a purchase, however.
