After upgrading from MS Outlook 98 to Outlook 2003, several phantom pst files showed up. There are now eleven mail files showing on the mail tab, four are valid. The first mail folder receives email and the last three mail (pst) folders are valid. The unnamed folders in the middle are the phantoms. All they show is a plus sign and an icon. Data file management does to see them so they cannot be located, renamed or removed. The files cannot be opened or accessed. Scanpst for the four named files shows no errors. I ran the Office detect and repair several times and there were no changes. I even looked for suspicious registry key entries and found none. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get rid of these phantoms

Check the following registry entry;
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
Messaging Subsystem\Profiles]

You should see the phantoms here.
Another way to go is to recreate (do not copy) your mail profile in Control
Panel-> Mail-> button Show Profiles
