Hello,

I hope someone can help me. I just received Verizon DSL
and when I hooked it I found that I had a bad NIC
installed. I removed it and replaced it with a different
brand and I put it into a different PCI Slot. Now for some
reason, the old NIC still shows up in device manager, not
once, but 23 times!

I did a registry search for it and deleted most of the
entries, but a few of them will not let me delete the
entry. I tried in both safe mode and regular mode and I do
have admin privalages.

Is there any tools or utilities I can use to fully clean
my registry out of this phantom NIC or should I just
reinstall Win2K?

Thanks.

Brian Carson

Usually to remove devices you'll want to first uninstall the device from
Device Manger then power down and physically remove it. This may work for
you.

To display hidden devices, non-Plug and Play devices, and devices not
attached to the computer (commonly known as "ghosted" or "phantom" devices)
From a command prompt;

set DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1

then also from the command prompt;
start devmgmt.msc

Then, use Device Manager to remove or reconfigure these devices. Do not edit
the registry.
