Phantom DNS Server

Folks..

I recently started setting up a W2000 Server which had the OS pre-installed
by a vendor. The vendor had named the machine "NewServer"...

I've since renamed it to another name (I'll use "NewName" for the examples).

If I go into the DNS management tool (dnsmgmty.msc/s) - all looks fine. It
has the correct "newname" down as the DNS server and the zones are correct.

If I go into the Computer Management tool (compmgmt.msc) connected to the
LOCAL machine and go down through:
Servers and Applications
DNS
It still has the DNS server defined as "NEWSERVER" with a red mark on it,
and eventually a message pops up that "NEWSERVER" cannot be found..

If I then do "Action" "Connect to Another Computer" and select THIS computer
"Newname" to connect to - the DNS server is again correctly defined as
"Newname"

It appears something is caught in the local configuration settings. I've
gone through the registry looking for the setting but can't find it.

Any ideas would be gratefully appreciated!

Did it give you an option to delete the original name?

Ace - unfortunately no. I changed the name using "My Computer"
"Properties" "Network Identification"

I then opened the DNS tool and added "Newname" as the DNS server.
When I did this - the DNS tool showed no DNS servers. The Computer
Management tool still showed "Newserver" and there is no option to
remove it.

It appears to only be a problem using the Computer Management tool -
but I'd like to get it sorted out before the server goes into
production.

Thanks - and any ideas?

Last time I changed a machine name such as what you did, I went into the
console, it showed the old name, then I rt-clicked on the old name, selected
'delete; and added in the new machine by it's new name. Now if you're using
WINS, since it uses the NetBIOS name, I made sure in WINS that the old name
was removed and ensured the new name was registered before proceeding. Then
the console showed me the correct name when I re-added the server.

If you like, I can offer to remote into your system and take a look for you.
The console should have (eventually) shown the new name.
