Do I need PestPatrol if I already have Norton SystemWorks and a firewall?
Thanks in advance for any comments or suggestions.

Yes you do need some other application as well as NSW & firewall weather
it's pest patrol's another story, I have tried it and noticed many false
positive's,Perhaps the registered version has some type of "add to ignore
list" I can't say.Their database at their site is very good and informative
through.
I use these tools and all work very good.

Spybot S&D - http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
Ad-aware - www.lavasoftusa.com
CWShedder - http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html

Boy, that's a lot of protection. Actually, I have tried most of the programs
you mentioned but found that running too many of them was really slowing down
my machine. So far I haven't had any problems with PestPatrol except the
cost. I think some of the false positives you mention may come from system
restore.

Those product do different things.
Whether you need either or both depends on what you do
with your machine more than on what these prodicts do.
There are free varieties of all of the functionalities you have
just mentioned, anti-virus, firewall, and malware hunters.

Sorry Roger but your answer brought more questions. I know the three do
different things but is what I have not enough? I did have a worm and a
trojan sneak in not long ago. I may have turned off some protection for a
couple of minutes for a download, not sure.

I thought I had all the bases covered but I guess not. The only downloads I
did were the MS updates and the various programs that "Map" mentioned. Oh,
and then there was Acrobat & Quicktime.) I didn't open any email attachments
but my machine had become a zombie (verified by ISP) so I deleted the
partition, reformated and started over clean, including wiping my free space.

Does most of the malware get onto the machine through cookies or what? When
I tested my security with MS, everything showed up as "safe" but then how
does this junk get onto the machine? Most all of the sites I view are very
reputable but then there are still the popups. I don't have all those
stopped so one questions is, which popup stoppers would you recommend?

I really want to understand more about security. I've purchased "Hacking
for Dummies" and "Hacking 4th Ed." not because I want to hack but to educate
myself about what the script kiddies know that I don't. I haven't had time
to read it yet. In the mean time, what can I do to be as safe as possible
without spending more money and time on computer maintenence/paranoia?

Most of the malware gets on a system these days via your active X settings
(dispite what others may say) they should be set to "prompt"

Go to control panel and open "internet options.
Click on the security tab then custom level.
make sure these settings are as follows.

Download signed active x controls>set to prompt
Download unsigned active x controls>set to disable
Initialize and script active x controls not marked as safe>set to disable
Run active x controls and pluggins>set to enable
Script active x controls marked safe for scripting>set to enable
Java permissions>set to high safety

Also you might want to install spywareblaster from my original post. It uses
no resources.

This is another good product,it has found items on my system that others
have missed,

Thanks for the help. I was wondering about activeX. I think that was active
when I caught the bugs. I will reset the activeX and download the other
program you mentioned. Should I do anything about Java?

I know I have someone from hawaii.rr.com port scanning my machine every
night. I also know how he got my address--I purchased something on the
Internet from him a couple of years ago.

Is the person "scanning" your system actually getting on? or is he just
trying to?
He shoudn't be able to get past your firewall.
As far as Java goes your system will be more secure without it but the web
will loose much of it's content and most pages will not display correctly it
will also be less enjoyable.I have mine eneabled but I still use Microsoft's
version,my system came with Sun's java but I don't believe they ever
addressed the byte verifirer trojan, after the first week I had 66 of these
trojans in suns "jar" folder.I don't know if this jar folder is a type of
quarintine file or not? so I installed M/S version and haven't had a problem
since.
I wish you luck,Later

As far as I know the person is just scanning and can't get in. Thanks for
everything. I'm gonna retire for the day. ;-) Time for dinner.
