there is a pest/virus circulating at the moment that block your antivirus to
update its antivirus list. it also blocks you from goin in antivirus
website. if u use norton, when your try yo update your antivirus, look very
carefully cause the info goes by very quick and the keyword is at the end of
the msg ( 2nd i think) when u try to update. the only way to unlock
antivirus updates is via dos commands.

I heard about malware doing this. I'd be interested in knowing the name
of the worm or trojan.

Several use AV and firewall killing, but that's an easier process kill
method. And they could write to the hosts file to prevent updates.

Most of the ones that prevent access to a specific site (or sites) do it
by nobbling the HOSTS file, afaik. This is trivially easy to fix.

If it's so trivially easy, won't you be so kind as to speak further...

Am troubleshooting this precise issue at the moment.

Grrr.

HOSTS.SAM and LMHOSTS.SAM. The hosts file will give domain to IP
mappings, so you can use it like DNS poisoning.

Thanks for correction.

There are some hosts files floating around on the web that will route all
banner ad hijinx to the bit bucket. I'd wager this plus QwikFix would
solve a lot of issues.

'at's what i'm talkin' about...

thanks, yo.

Don't try them with Win2k pro though .. for some reason Win2k Pro does a
cr&p job when it has a large HOSTS file (I assume it must be rechecking
the validity every second or two) .. basically if you hand it a ~2k
entry HOSTS file you will observe your PC going to sleep on you.

If not HOSTS then may be the Pri DNS setting was changed to go to bogus DNS.
