I have tried to turn off all sounds on both Windows and
Netscpe explorer. All the bells and musical chimes have
shut down. Yet one annoying sound persists every time I
left-click the mouse to change a web page or go off line.
The sound is an annoying metalic thump. Please, how do I
get rid of it?

If you cannot find it in Control Panel/Sounds and Multimedia - Sounds tab
(probably under "Windows Explorer - Start Navigation"), you may be able to
find out which .wav file is being played by going to your winnt\media folder
and playing the sounds in there until you hear it (probably "start.wav").
Then you could search the registry for that wav filename to delete it, or just
delete/rename the wav file itself.

A likely place to find it is under one of the following keys:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Sounds
