Personal Macro Workbook will not open

When I start Excel my personal.xls does not open. When I try to record a
macro to the file it tells me that "Personal Macro Workbook must remain open
for recording". I have deleted all my temp files thinking that perhaps
something was locking it. When that failed to work I deleted personal.xls. I
was then able to write a macro to the file but when I closed and reopened
Excel I have the same problem. What can I do to solve this problem?

Shel

Excel will open personal.xls by default, providing

1) You have no setting in Tools>Options...>General>Alternate startup file
location (Excel uses XlStart folder by default but if this entry is
different, personal.xls needs to be in here)

2) With updates the location has changed and in some instances there is a
confusion as to where it is. You seem to have overcome this though through
recording a new macro

I suspect 1.

The field that you were mentioning is blank. As a test I tried to force it
to open all the files in that folder. When I told it to save the folder and
checked it, the changes were gone. Do you think a reinstall of Excel would
fix this?

A re-install in seldom necessary, you might try 'detect and repair' under
help

I did a detect and repair, no change. I am able to open personal.xls through
file..open, it just won't open automatically. What next?

Thanks for your help Nick.

You are aware this file is hidden in Excel aren't you? Window>Unhide... If
Unhide is greyed out Excel is not seeing the file. If it is not then there
are some files which are hidden, personal.xls should be amongst them, it
will show in the dialog fired by this command.

Nick, The file will not open automatically. I am able to browse to the file
and select it to open it but that is the only way I can open it or run my
macros. It should open on it's own when excel is loaded.

I am aware it should open when Excel does...my point is you shouldn't be
able to see it, it is a hidden workbook. If you take the route I gave you,
you will see whether it is open/hidden or not even open, then we can work
through other diagnosis

Nick, "Unhide" is greyed out. I can also tell the file is not open because I
am unable to see my macro code in the vba editor.

Sheldon

OK

If you now record a new macro, doesn't matter what it is, just ask for it to
be recorded in your personal workbook. Now save everything and shut Excel.
Re-open Excel...can you see your personal.xls now? (Window unhide)

No, I have to delete personal.xls before it will allow me to record to it
again but once I do that and shutdown Excel I have to open the file manually
again.

Ok

Do you get any message when you try to record to it or is the option to
record just greyed out?

When I try to record to it I get a message saying "Personal Macro Workbook in
the startup folder must stay open for recording."
