When I try to run QuickTime I get an Error #-2095 alert. When I click
Run As Administrator it opens OK.

I am the owner and sole user of the computer!

How do a give full permissions to myself?

I tried going to the program file, opening properties and then the
Permissions tab. There are 3 entries in the top window:

SYSTEM
Administrator (EUSTACE PC\Adminstrators)
Users (EUSTACE PC\Users)

When I click the last, in the lower window I see checked only Read &
Execute and Read, not Full control and the others.

I clicked Edit, and added checkmarks to everything (except Special
Permissions that I can't).

I click OK and return to the former dialog, but the permissions for
Users have not changed.

When I click Advanced I see 4 lines. Lines 2 and 3 are System and
Administrator. Lines 1 and 4 are:

Allow Users (EUSTACE PC\Users) Full Control <not inherited>
Allow Users (EUSTACE PC\Users) Read & Execute C:\Program Files\

Is the second line necessary?

If I highlight it and click Edit and then highlight it again and click
Edit, check Full control, OK, the dialog closes and in the first dialog
the line 1 is highlighted and line 4 is the same.

What should I do?

Thanks,

Eustace

For whole folder where QuickTime is stored give Users group MODIFY
right

I see in the list of Group of User names the following:

CREATOR OWNER
SYSTEM
Administrator (EUSTACE PC\Administrator)
Users (EUSTACE PC\Users)
TrustedInstaller

I checked Modify in Users but it didn't work...

Any other ideas?

It may be a registry key permission that is causing the problem.

I had seem that thread before posting here, but I do not think it
applies to my case: there is no problem with assigning permissions to
other users. Let's see:

When in the Registry I highlight QuickTime and click Edit > Permissions,
there are 4 groups/users in the list:

CREATOR/OWNER
SYSTEM
Administrator...
Users...

I have added Full Control to the Users (me). No effect.

Anything else?

Try uninstalling Quicktime and installing again, only this time right-click
the install exe and select ' Run as administrator'.

Are the boxes by any change grey? If so, then the permissions are inherited
and can only be changed by an administrator.

An administrator changes permissions by selecting the "advanced permissions"
box. This brings up a menu of special permissions (which give finer
control) and it also include the box which disables inherited permissions.
Then you revert back to the original permissions page and give your user
level account full control.
As an aside, it is ill advised to use the built in administrator account for
any purpose other than emergency repair. Just create another member of the
administrators group for every day tasks.
It is also strange that the user names do not include NETWORK_SERVICE and
LOCAL_SERVICE. Windows uses these two accounts to start programs which do
not need full permissions.

The file is probably owned by TrustedInstaller.

You need to take ownership of the file.

Right-click icon
Select Properties
Click Securities tab
Click Advanced button
Click Owner tab

If the Current owner is TrustedInstaller click the Edit... button and change
it to Administrators or yourself.

Use Process Monitor 'Process Monitor'

to diagnose issue with permissions

I followed the directions you gave in other message and I got the following:

QuickTimePlayer.exe 2488 RegOpenKey
HKCU\Software\VirtualStore\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Apple Computer.Inc\QuickTime
ACCESS DENIED Denied Access Read

QuickTimePlayer.exe 2488 RegOpenKey
HKCU\Software\VirtualStore\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Apple Computer.Inc\QuickTime
ACCESS DENIED Denied Access Query Value

The last line was repeated 4 times. What do you make of it?

And BTW why there are so many other Access Denied items?

I am afraid I made some mistake. I changed it to

Eustace (EUSTACE PC\Eustace

and now when I try to open it as Adminstrator the User Account Control
alert appears asking me to Continue... Before it didn't do that. When I
click it to open it the same error alert appears as before.

Unfortunately this did not work either...
