Permissions on folders

Thomas

I am fairly new to 2000 but understand that the
permissions set on the parent folder will be inherited by
all objects beneath it. Currently on of my folders has the
everyone group full control but a subfolder will not allow
me to set or change permissions on it, it gives me an
initial message that I do not have permission but will
still bring up the box to add users or groups. I
appreciate anyone that can provide any assistance on this
matter.

Thank you

By default -- most admins never get over this and therefore
never finish setting the specific permissions they should use
on SOME files down below.

[For instance, Executables should not be WRITABLE even
by Admins on a day to day basis.]

You likely don't "own" the subfolder. Are you in the
Administrators group, or running the Administrator account?

Rules:
Permissions are changed ONLY* by someone with
Full Control (or a really odd combo of special permissions)
Even an admin cannot change** someone ELSE'S file without
permission (really, it's a rule)
*Owners are an exception -- owner can always change permissions
on their own file
**Admins can "take ownership" by default -- so this convinces
many people that admins can change permissions on other's
files without having full control. They cannot; they can take
ownership and then they fall under the previous rule BUT
now it's not the "other person's" file.
Only admins have the take ownership right*** by default
(don't change that)
***Anyone can take ownership of a file IF they have full control
(so it's not true that only Admins can "take ownership but
you can see how that is close to the truth and people learn
the general rule rather than the full story.)

Thems the rules (almost) exactly.

Try going into the permissions of the parent folder (the
one which everyone has full control of) and then click
on 'advanced' and then 'reset permissions on all child
objects and enable propogation of inheritable
permissions'. Then say yes to the 'do you wish to
continue message.
