Permissions errors trying to export/import .pst to laptop

I'm trying to export my .pst to my laptop so I can format my desktop drive
without losing valuable mails. When I do the export, I save the file to a
shared drive, then verify that the read only attribute is not checked for the
export file. When I try to import the file from the shared drive, I get
permission denied errors. I tried burning .pst export backup file to CD, and
get same error.

Desktop is running XP Pro and Office 2003 Laptop is running XP Home and
Office 2003.

..pst format is not unicode (97-2002)

Never export. Just copy the PST with Outlook closed.

Was Outlook closed when you copied the PST?

Outlook was closed. I tried to just copy the .pst first, and the same
permissions error came up.

Now, I have two other problems that are crippling my ability to try anything
more:

1) Whenever I try to do a "search" for files or folders, my search window
goes away ( as if it never was opened).

2) When I try to connect to internet, as soon as the window loads in IE, it
also goes away (as if it never was opened).

These errors make me feel I need to format c: and reload all software.
Problem is, I have to back up the .pst files (among any many other backups I
have to do) so, I have a major problem.

Then it probably wasn't closed. Use the Task Manager to see if there is
still an Outlook.exe process running. Unless Outlook is truly closed, any
atempt to copy your PST is likely to fail or produce a ruined copy.

Nothing comes to mind for these problems. Sorry.
