Steven

I have two computers, both running xp home, sp1. They are connected via
router and I can see each computer from the other, but I cannot access any
information. I have shared the c drive on the secondary and I see it listed
on my main computer, but I get the error:

"\\betty\shareddocs is not accessible. You might not have permission to use
this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out
if you have access permissions."

Now I am sure it is some simple setting that I am missing and I would really
appreciate it if someone could assist me in completing the access. I have a
lot of files that I want to transfer to the new computer and I need this
working.

Thanks In Advance

same error message, but I can't even get the Workgroup to show up with
anything in it at all on the main computer at all, though tthe other computer
on the network can see it- go figure. I think I am the administrator, and I
have contacted myself. I need help, too! My network was working until SP2.
I have turned firewalls, on and off, and have tried everything in the
networking troubleshooting 2 times. thanks for anything- need some simple
things to try (not an expert)

Just a stab here, but check the properties of the network adapters
themselves, wired and wireless and make sure file and print sharing is
enabled there.

Steven,

Is the Guest account enabled on both computers?

Do any of the computers have a software firewall (ICF / WF, or third party)? If
so, you need to configure them for file sharing, by opening ports TCP 139, 445
and UDP 137, 138, 445, and / or by identifying the other computers as present in
the Local (Trusted) zone. Firewall configurations are a very common cause of
(network) browser, and file sharing, problems.

JJ,

Try enabling the File & Printer Sharing exception in Windows Firewall, for your
local LAN only.

Is WF the firewall you're talking about, or do you have a third party firewall
too?

Hope by now that you were able to resolve your problem. If not, consider
turning off your Win XP Firewall. I had what sounds to be an identical
problem and part of the cause was conflict between my Norton Internet
Securityh Firewall and my Window Firewall both being enabled. I was advised
to turn off my Windows Firewall.
Note: I had some additional problems getting thru the Norton Firewall; but
was able to resolve them by specifically including the IP addresses of my two
home networked PC's as "trusted sites" in the Norton Internet Security
Firewall area.

My solution

I had similar problem. I don't have windows firewall on. I have a firewall on my router, but it is set up fine. I noticed that a maped drive I made worked fine though. I went to the security setting of shareddoc on each computer and noticed that only the system and the base user had permissions so I set up permissions for "Everyone" to full control. Adding each computer name would have been more secure, but what is someone going to hack, my swedish meatball recipe?
