Hello, I was on the phone with Microsoft technician for two hours and he was not able to fix my problem. Here is the scenario. I have two pc and both have XP. I have Comcast cable modem connected to linx router. Two pc connected to router. Computer A and Computer B are networked but when I try to access Computer A from computer B via the network workgroup I get the following message:

\\Computer A is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer.

I get the same message when I am trying to access Computer B from computer A. Please help as I have ran out of options. We tried everything. No firewall, gave all users same security level. All users on Computer A the same as Computer B. All users have administrator rights. Guests users are turned on. C drive is shared.

First of all, you can always call Microsoft back with your same case number
and may have better experience when a different tech looks at the issue with
a new perspective. Microsoft will make every effort to resolve the issue.

I do have a possible solution. I think this is a permissions issue of some kind.
Are your computers XP Home or XP Pro?

Please check this out:

Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Local Security Policy | Local Policies | User Rights Assignments |
In the right hand pane double click on "Access this computer from the network"
Make sure that the appropriate Groups and Users are listed here.
Here is what is listed on My Computer:

Administrators*
ASPNET
Backup Operators*
Everyone*
IUSR_HOST
IWAM_HOST
Power Users*
(My Username that I log on with)*
Users*

(Your computer will not neccessarily have the same list; the ones I marked with an asterisk are ones that I THINK should be listed here by default)
(I would only ADD items here for now, not REMOVE)
(This is something you might want to check back with Microsoft about)

In the right hand pane, double click on "Deny access to this computer from the network"
On my system, the only item that is listed there is "SUPPORT_388945a0"
I would remove anything else from this list and then click on "Apply" and "OK"
(Make a note of what it is you removed before removing them)

Then restart both computers and test issue again.

However, again, maybe you will want to call Microsoft back first and go over these possibilities
with another tech first before taking any action.
