permanent page numbers

I would like to permanently number the pages in my Powerpoint deck so
that I can rearrange the slides but still have the fixed number appear
on each slide even though I change the slide order.

Can this be done?

So if you number the pages 1,2,3,4

and re-arrange them you would intentionally like

3,4,2,1 ?

If that's the case, the only way I can think of would be to

put a text box on each slide and manually enter the number

That way it's not an automatic 'slide number' but just a piece of text.
