Hi,
my disk indicates permanent activity from start-up until shut-down.
according to the red led(lamp) the disk is periodically accessed
like a clock (about 1/sec). The Task Manager includes about 35
processes(cpu=00), and one inactive(idle?) system process with
cpu =97-98.
is this normal? i'm concerned about the life-time of the disk ~)
how can i trace the process(app?) that causes it?

Hi, Jacob.

WinXP does some housekeeping in the background. Among other things, you may
have it set to index the whole disk to make future searches faster. This
can take a very long time, so, to keep from having you "locked out" of your
machine while it works, Windows does it in the background while you keep
working.

The System Idle Process is just what it says: your CPU is idling, waiting
for you to give it something to do. Like your car engine while you wait at
a stoplight. It has to be doing something, even if it is not productive.

thx r.c,
can you clarify the disk indexing issue? is it an XP feature,
and if so, how and where it is defined?
or is it a 3rd party tool(i've Norton SystemWorks installed).

To stop the indexing, right click your drive and untick "Allow indexing
Service to index this disk for fast file searching".
