I'm in the market for a new graphics card

I currently own a 9800 Pro

Is it worth me getting a 800XL? (am I correct in understanding these are the
same as a XT but a bit slower? i.e. they have all 16 pipelines enabled,
unlike the 800 pro) I would be interested in how much faster this card [800
XL] is than my current one? Or should I get 2 GF6600 GT's in SLI mode?

Also when are the SLI ATI cards coming out?

is there a DECENT site with specs on these cards?

Depends what CPU you have and what games you like to play.

I have just upgraded from a Barton 2500+ & 9800 Pro to an AMD64 3000+ &
X800XL. Yes, the X800XL is basically an XT, but on TSMCs 0.11um process
(instead of a 0.13um SOI? process) and is thus clocked lower.

Decent improvement, haven't really had the chance to fully test it yet.

http://www.pny.com heads and above better than anything ati has to offer,
usa toll free tech support unlike ati and the price of the card is under 200
dollars....

Very true. I was on www.guru3d.com and there was a good article on there
talking about high-end CPU's in conjunction with high-end video cards. This
is not a current article, but it did show performance comparisons of a
2.8GHz P4 and an Athlon 64 3800+ using video cards such as the X800 Pro,
X800 XT, 6800GT and 6800 Ultra. It was clear to see from the article that
the 2.8GHz P4 even with PC3200 RAM was not able to feed the
12-pixel-pipeline X800 Pro to it's potential (the weakest video card
tested). Generally speaking, the X800 Pro fared much better with the 3800+
processor. If you go to www.guru3d.com and then click on Articles & Guides
at the top and then scroll down a little bit, you will see the article.

For me, it was interesting because I myself have a 2.8GHz Northwood C
processor with 1GB of PC3200 RAM!

It does look to be a very good bang-for-the-buck video card.

It's worth being aware that the X800XL (like all other of ATI's current
offerings) does not have Pixel Shader 3.0 support. This is not a big deal
at this point in time, but with the R520 rumored to come out in the summer
sometime, it may well be worth waiting for since it will for sure have Pixel
Shader 3.0 support.

Indeed. Not geat clock speeds, just a reliable process with very good
yields.

Well I was going for a new motherboard, and thought I'd go PCI Express,
so I needed a card, and I didn't want to spend money for an equivlent X700.

For now, the X800XL is more than enough.

Heh, that was an unintended thing on my part, but I was amazed at how much
of a bottleneck on the video cards were present between the two processors
tested! I thought that the 2.8GHz P4 was still totally solid as far as
newer video cards were concerned. It is good, but falls far short of seeing
newer cards to their potential.

Well I was going for a new motherboard, and thought I'd go PCI Express,

My apologies, the last part of my post was intended for the original poster!
But I do agree with you that the X800XL is a decent card and I think it
should be good even as a gaming card for a couple of years for sure. Of
course, depending on your expectations! Heck, I think my 9800 Pro (which is
going to be 2 years old in July) still has at least another year left in it
as far as my graphics expectations are concerned.

Hi Doug, of course a 3200+ would beat a 2.8GHz P4, but I figured that the P4
would be able to feed the video cards in the article better than what it
did.

So what would 2 6600GT's perform like on my system? would they be better
than a 800xl?

Athlon 3500 (Winchester) 1024 DDR3200 (Cas 2.0)
 
I don't know about the 800Xl but someone over on Rage3d (I just found out
about Rage3d, it's not a video card after all) named Vegeance has an Athlon
3200 and when he upgraded to a 6800GT got huge framerate increases (relative
to his 9800 Pro). You don't have to register to search their forums either.

I have an AMD64 3500 with a X800XL. With Call of Duty (full details,
1280x1024) I get 90 fps.

Well I have just got a 6800Ultra! ouch, cost me 400 UK pounds (inc delivery)
so I will have to save up for another one to go SLI!!
