I've noticed a disturbing pattern after a fresh install of Windows, and
that the first time I defrag the disk, performance takes a tumble.
I've also noticed that the thrashing noise from the hard disk seeking
actually happens more frequently. And, yes, the pagefile and registry
hives are defragmented.
I don't know why, though i have a few suspicions.
My chief suspect is that the built in defragmenter inavertantly moves
files that are accessed together away from each other. For example,
the files associated with loading Windows, and the various processes,
drivers, and system tray stuff.
My questions: is this reasonable? Is there anything I can do about it?
And how much would it cost?
