I have P2 350MHz in a Slot 1 on a Asus DB98XV 1.01, running WindowsXP Home
with all updates. Have had no problems with this system and running many
programs, but would like to speed up the CPU. Have a chance to get some PII
& PIII's running from 400MHz to 866MHz all Slot 1. My question is will these
CPU's interchange without any other changes? Also the present motherboard
has a Slot 1 (SE242 connector) for the CPU and I notice that most Pentium's
in this speed range state they are a SECC2 Package, is this the same package
I presently have as I can not find any package specs. on mine?
Any help would be appreciated,

Jack

Your best bet is to try the ASUS support website. They usually list which
CPUs are compatible with each of their motherboards.

Also, be aware that CPU speed is not all that important to most programs,
except for some games and movie processing software. I say this based on
having used systems from Pentium II 450 Mhz, through to Pentium 4 3000+ MHz.

What seems to be more important to programs running under XP is having
plenty of RAM. Try to learn how much RAM your PC will handle, then install
that. Do not install more, as it may cause problems, and certainly will not
be used. As a reference point, my 450 MHz machine could only use 384 Meg,
whereas a new Pentium 4 could handle up to 4 Gig of RAM.

Hi Jack

You're on the ball SECC2 is indeed Slot 1.

That is correct. However, the SECC-2 packaging is a little
bit different from the original SECC packaging. A different
Slot-1 retention mechanism is needed since the SECC-2 has a
notch was added to CPU housing for improved lockdown. The new
mounting mechanism is known as the Universal Retention Mount,
or URM.

Your motherboard is an OEM-only model, manufactured for HP by Asus. As
such, there is precious little information available regarding supported
CPU upgrades. Any Slot1 or Socket370 processor will physically fit on
your board (S370 will require a slot adapter), but whether it will work
depends on:

1. BIOS support for newer processors - may not be available (but BIOSes
can be patched).
2. Voltage regulator chip - may not support lower voltages required by
newer processors.
3. Clock generator chip - may limit you to 100Mhz FSB processors.

Your board uses the Intel 440BX chipset. Asus OEM 440BX boards can
usually be upgraded to a 1Ghz P3, and sometimes to a 1.4Ghz Celeron or
P3-S. Such upgrades are officially unsupported, but they work well if
they work at all.

You may get lucky and receive a response from someone who has
successfully upgraded a DB98XV board, but more than likely you will have
to go under the hood and find out which chips were used on your board
and which configuration settings are available via jumpers or BIOS.

Feel free to email me for assistance with determining the possibilities
for your board. I have not worked on a DB98XV before, but I expect it
will be similar to other Asus 440BX boards I have analysed and upgraded:

Thanks for the help P2B
..
It is a HP Computer and I went on their site and downloaded their
motherboard specs. It shows that the jumpers on the board can be configured
up to 500MHz
and it only has PC66 or PC100 bus speeds.

I don' think putting a 500MHz chip in would help that much, so I'm
giving up the idea and being everything is working OK with a Max of 384MB
SDRAM I'll wait until the whole thing gives up the ghost and put in a new
motherboard and CPU

I don't use the computer for any games or extensive graphics, mostly
used for WordPerfect, StarOffice, Excel, Quicken, and other programs.

In that case it definitely supports P3 Katmai processors (up to 600Mhz),
but may not have BIOS support for P3 Coppermine processors (up to 1.1Ghz).

If you can find a used 500-600Mhz Slot 1 Katmai processor, it should
cost no more than $10-$15 and IMHO would be worthwhile for the price.

Note that the layout of newer boards may be quite differerent and the board
may not fit.

Plus, the power supply connectors will probably not match; you might be
better off simply replacing machine rather than swap part after part.
