Pentium 4 (Prescott) 3.0 or Athlon 64 3000+?

Can anyone advise me which one of these processors is best for me?

I mostly use Office programs with a little gaming and some multimedia (video
playback). And lots of Internet searching.

An Athlon 64 3000+ would be great, although so would an Athlon XP2600+
for your intended use.

Athlon 64, it runs much cooler that the Prescott and it will be much
faster for the type of applications that you run.

Is there any reason to go 64 bit or would I really just be better getting a
faster Athlon?

All OS will mature to 64 bit, whether your new build makes
use of it depends on your choices in the future. It is a
positive feature but if you don't feel you'll need it then
get a Sempron... you can always buy a faster A64 later,
after the price drops more.

Better performance and lower heat than any other
alternative, with very few exceptions (new applications
optimized for the P4, which are a significant additional
expense).
