Anyone know when Pegasus is coming out with a new version? Their last
few releases have been buggy, and we haven't heard from them for a
long time - maybe a year.

The current version (4.12a) is from 19th June 2003, which is not that
long ago imo. It's an excellent e-mail programme, not meant for
complaining beginners. For them there is Nutlook Xpress

I agree with AnonyMouse about the bugginess of recent releases of
PMWin. This has nothing to do with being a beginner or a complainer,
and it has made me very reluctant to upgrade without compelling
reasons.

I "upgraded" to version 4.02, released in August, 2002 (so your claim
tha 4.12a is recent is somewhat exaggerated), and got no improved
functionality for my usage pattern out of the switch, but a very major
security risk that didn't exist before:

PMWin defaults the attachment viewer setting to "preview", and there
appears to be no way of changing the default to "no preview".
Futhermore, the setting display is ambiguous, in that the caption
above the selection icon reads "no preview", when the default is set
to preview. Consequently, it's all to easy to inadvertently open an
attachment (just left click instead of right-click when you intend to
save it to a folder).

As a (presumably) non-beginner, can you tell me whether the current
version has fixed this problem?

In my experience, 4.12a remembers the last preview/no preview setting. I
share your other complaints, however, and have one of my own: PM is often
unable to delete attachments. At least with OE, I could save a message an
an eml file, manually delete the attachment and then reimport the message.
(Come to think of it, it is possible to something similar with PM, but it
is much more complicated, because it would involve creating and deleting
Unix mboxes. Hm.)

Geesh, you're right. It seems to me I used to be a able to delete
attachments in 4.02, but now I can't. I get a pop-up asking me to
confirm, but when I do, nothing happens. The attachment is still
there!

It was a lot easier in the 3.xx series, when one could simply copy the
message to another folder, and the attachments were left behind. In
4.02, all the attachments are copied as well....

The trick I haven't been able to figure out is how to import a group
of messages from Pegasus running on my laptop or on another desktop
into my main version of Pegasus.

The trick I haven't been able to figure out is how to import a group
of messages from Pegasus running on my laptop or on another desktop
into my main version of Pegasus.

Easy. Mount the laptops mailbox directory from within Pegasus on the
desktop computer (assuming the two computers are connected). In a
multiuser environment one can also simply mount another users
mailboxes by username (if Pegasus knows the username, it will of
course also know the users current mailbox location). As long as
Pegasus can access the location of the mail directory you want to
mount, no problem. Also notice - one can mount any directory as a
mailbox - as long as the directory contains files recognized by
Pegasus as mail folders; Pegasus own folder pair of files (*.pmm for
folder-file and *.pmi for folder-index), but also standard Unix *.mbx
format (as used by Eudora and some other clients). The "mounting" is
done via the the "Add Mailbox to List" command in Pegasus Folders menu
(option only visible when folder manager window active).

Here, from the help:

<quote>
The Folders menu is available on the menu bar when the folder
manager window is the current window. It contains less-frequently
used options for managing your folders.

Add mailbox to list: This command allows you to add another
mailbox to your folder view. You will be prompted to enter a
directory or a username which Pegasus Mail should use to locate
the mailbox. It will then proceed to add that mailbox as a root
entry in the Folder Manager window, and will add any recognizable
mail folders from that location into that root entry. Mailboxes
added to the Folder Manager in this way are just like your own
mailbox - you can read messages, create folders, move messages
around (including between mailboxes) and so on.

Examples of uses for this command include:
* Secretaries who need to access the boss's mailbox while he's
away on business
* System administrators who need to troubleshoot a user's mailbox
* Accessing folders from another mail program, such as Eudora
(Pegasus Mail can read the unix folder format used by Eudora),
so you can migrate messages from one to the other.
* Accessing two mailboxes when you use a laptop and can be both
attached to a LAN in NetWare mode, and regularly using your
laptop in standalone mode on the road.
</qoute>

If the mounted mailbox/directory resides on removable drive, or remote
computer that will not be permanently available (like a laptop), I
think it is a good idea to always make sure you "dismount" (remove
from list) the mounted mailbox in Pegasus before removing the drive or
breaking the connection.

Also notice that when copying between mailboxes, you can only move or
copy messages to/from folders, you can not copy folders as such.
You can however create new folders in the mounted mailboxes (and then
copy messages) as well as in your existing folder structure of course.

Thanks, I knew there was a way to do it. But I'd always done it in the
New Mail folder, and so didn't know that you have to move the e-mail
back to that folder in order to delete attachments and then save the
e-mail without the attachments. Not exactly intuitive.

Thanks also for the help on moving messages from one system to
another. I don't have a permanent network, and only rarely connect my
systems via null-modem ethernet cable, so I hadn't thought of that
possibility. I HAVE copied folders from one Pegasus install to
another, and then redirected Pegasus to the new folders, and it was
very messy.

The network methods should work much better.

I have, but I've found the chances of a useful response on Pegasus
questions are better here than in the pegasus NG. This is even more
true of Linux questions in Linux NGs.

-----snip-----

Well. that would explain why it worked some times and not others, wouldn't
it? It turns out that the New Mail folder isn't a folder at all, but rather
a collection of individual message files; which, in fact, I already knew,
without bothering to think of the significance of it. Among other things,
it certainly saves the need to frequently compact the inbox.

Thanks for your help, Bjorn.

You can only delete the attachment while it is in the New Mail folder.
Once it gets move it is part of the message.
