Hi all,
Is there a way I could share a files/folders with a
friend using Internet? I have a DSL connection to the
Internet and my friend has a dial-up connection. (as if we
were in a LAN)?

Thanks,
David.

David,

short of using a VPN (Virtual Private Network), you can find
your IP address (like through http://myipaddress.com/) and send
it to your friend. Then he can log on to your computer through
the Internet and share files and printers.

However, you have to have no NAT (Network Address Translation)
or have your computer defined in the DMZ (DeMilitarized Zone),
and disable firewalls or at least open the required ports
(around TCP 137, check for details).

H-G is right, but keep in mind that any files that can be accessed
by your friend can also be accessed by your worst enemies, and by
any of the thousands of playful kiddies worldwide. Think of folks
pawing through your HDs looking for credit card info, SSNs, and
passwords; and think of folks injecting virii and malware into your
HDs.

Arrrgh -- use VPN.

Bob,

yes, I forgot to mention (thought it obvious) that you have to
close all holes in the machine. Block guest access over the
network, use long passwords, apply all security patches, etc. A
VPN is certainly much more secure.
