PC1 desktop W2K Cable modem(firewall disabled), PC2 laptop also W2K

The LAN cards/cable modem all have unique IP numbers yet I get no ping
between the 2 pcs either through a hub or with a crossover cable.

Loopback ping is fine on both

This is driving me crazy, anyone got any ideas?

Could you post a little more information?

Does PC1 have 2 network cards? or is the cable modem connected some
other way?

Also, information about your TCP/IP config would be useful. on both
computers, Go to Start -> Programs -> Command Prompt and type:

ipconfig /all

then copy & paste the readout to here.

Thanks Ben I should have done this first off

Steve

You didn't answer the question of how these two pcs are connected to each
other.

Let me guess: the desktop connects to the modem via the usb adapter, and
you're trying to connect the two pcs together via their ethernet adapters.

If that's true, problem one is the ethernet adapter shown above has no "real"
IP address - it only has an APIPA address. As long as that's the case I doubt
the laptop will ever be able communicate with the desktop via tcpip.

Did you actually enable Internet Connection Sharing on the desktop pc?

One solution:
- manually configure the desktop's enet adapter with a private ip address (eg:
192.168.1.10).

- then manually configure the laptop's enet adapter with ip address
192.168.1.11, and set its gateway address to point to the desktop (ie:
192.168.1.10).

- make sure any firewall apps running on either/both ends are temporarily
disabled

- then use a cross-over cable to tie the two together, and try to ping each
machine from the other and see what happens.

If you get that much working it shouldn't be hard to get ICS running on the
desktop and configure the laptop to use it...
